Housing Justice in Boston
In addition to my academic work, I am engaged in local efforts to address the housing crisis in Boston by working with two Community Land Trusts (CLTs), which aim to expand affordable housing and advance housing as a human right. The CLT model was established in rural Georgia during the Civil Rights era to ensure access to farmland among Black farmers. Since then, it’s been retrofitted in urban contexts to resist gentrification and promote community control of land. While working with Comunidades Enraizadas CLT in Chelsea, I assisted with management of the organization’s membership database and helped to strategize for the organization’s new Homeownership Pathways program, which prepares local residents for future homeownership. At Somerville Community Land Trust, I have written grant applications and staffed events, and I continue to volunteer as a member of the organization’s Fundraising Committee. Apart from my scholarship, I am committed to learning from and with the community I am part of. Building on these experiences, I plan to pursue community-engaged research in the future.
